About Me
My name is Renato, I'm Panamanian, with Italian and Cuban roots — and I've called Hungary home for more than 20 years. That's not a line from a brochure. It's the reason I do this work. I've been through Hungarian residence permit processes myself, more than once — sometimes on my own, sometimes with a lawyer at my side — so I know the system from both sides of the table: as the applicant staring at unfamiliar paperwork, and as someone who eventually mastered it well enough to apply for citizenship on my own in 2019, and succeed.
From Writer to Full-Time Expert
In 2016, after finishing university and wanting to write again, I started a blog in Spanish language with articles and guides for tourists and expats. People started finding me through it — asking questions, reaching out with their own specific situations — so I began helping them in my free time. Over the years, that grew into something more formal: I became an Expat Consultant and a Licensed Tour Guide, alongside my career as a Senior Project Manager in the corporate world. At the middle of 2022, I left that corporate career behind to do this full-time. That written work has since evolved into video and in English language, and today my YouTube channel is where I share that same guidance, with anyone who needs it.
From Panama to Hungary
My path here wasn't planned. In 2003, I left Panama to work as a waiter on a Caribbean cruise ship, saving up for an apartment or a university degree back home. None of that worked out — and in 2006, I moved to Budapest for good. Now I have a Hungarian wife and 3 Hungarian daughters.
I've lived here ever since, and in that time I've experienced pretty much everything that comes with building a life in Hungary as an outsider: immigration procedures, more times than I can count; surgery on my knee in a Hungarian public hospital; getting married; culture shock, more than once; learning to navigate the local working culture; dealing with neighbors, schools, and everyday bureaucracy. I also learned Hungarian to an advanced level — something that took years, and that changed everything about how I could solve my own problems here.
My Mission
Not every expat has the same time or money to work with — I know that first-hand. When I first arrived, I didn't speak Hungarian, and I couldn't always afford legal assistance.
